Setting New Year’s Goals to Become Debt Free

by Brooke 2. January 2010 17:44

If the bills have been piling and it seems like you are swimming in oceans of debt, then you may also want to ask, “will someone help me with debt?”  The New Year is also bringing new opportunity to begin clearing out all the unpaid items that have been building while moving into a complete resolution that will leave you worry free.  Following are the first steps to take to become debt free.

  1.  Set your budget.  If you don’t have a budget yet, then start calculating.  You want to make sure that you include all living, personal and professional expenses.  You also want to add in how much you make per month.  Adding this up will let you know how much you can spend and how much to pay on your debt.
  2. Know how much is too much.  The next step to take when you are asking “help me with debt,” is to focus on what you can or can’t afford.  You want to go through individual bills to determine exactly what you can or can’t pay.  Once you set this, you will be able to take the first steps to be debt free.
  3. Contact your debtors.  No matter what stage of debt you are at, you can begin to reverse this process by contacting debt collectors.  Depending on the debt collector, you will be able to have the correct options to begin reversing your debt.  You want to make sure that you work with the plan that fits your specific budget so you don’t fall behind in your bills again.
  4. Know your options.  Most debt collectors will require you to set up a payment arrangement or debt settlement plan.  This is dependent on the debt collector and specific regulations of the time.  However, if you can’t pay what the debt collectors are asking for, make sure you don’t settle.  You can easily work into a debt settlement plan that pays a portion of what you need to or that provides you with specific installments.  You can also work on a payment arrangement for low, monthly payments that fit with the budget you have set.
  5. Get help.  The easiest way to begin finding a solution is to get help.  There are several services that ensure you are able to reverse the debt that you are in so that you have strong credit.  Doing this will provide you with an effective plan that can easily work within your means.
With these three simple steps, you can easily find an answer when you ask “help me with debt.”  If you are not certain about this process, then contacting someone who can evaluate your situation and that can work with you will easily allow you to reverse the situation that you are in.  Sticking to the process and making sure that you are aware of what needs to be done will help you to move back into good standing with your credit.
